simmonds-yin residence
shenton park, western australia
Located on what was once a playground adjoining an old church, the brief began with the request for a big room. A specific request for an uncompromisingly modern design was initially knocked back on streetscape issues - the street is in a heritage listed precint. As strategy for engagement, a ‘mask’ was developed as the new ‘front’, with pitch and facade proportions alluding to the church next door. By siting the geometry directly next to the church, mask consolidates into illusion. Screened from the street, the entry into this residence, coyly peeks out from the side, slipping past as a slot recessed back to the ‘other’ side of the house.
