joondanna western australia
an ugly duckling is transformed into a swan with wings spread ready for flight, poised overlooking Perth from a high point in the suburb of Joondana. The existing 1950’s red brick home is currently being substantially remodelled, with the roof and major walls removed to make way for the new volumes and spaces floating over the existing basement garage and ground levels. Courtyards to the front and rear of the property are linked via the timber platform/decking areas through the house, enhancing the sense of space from within. Expansive glass and raking ceilings open up to the views to the Perth skyline to the South. A dark weatherboarded box housing the Walk-in Robe and Ensuite for the Master Bedroom protects from the Western sun and creates a sculptural volume which hangs over the main entry area, partly as a canopy, and partly signalling presence on the street. A ‘Ned Kelly’ window from this volume peers south down the hill, surveying the approaching City from the shower.
