Behind this 1930’s Deco Californian Bungalow, yet totally hidden from view, lies a contemporary addition grafted to the original dwelling.
With a pallet of chromed metal, black gloss surfaces, rich timber finishes, red face brickwork, white gloss steel, and timber framing, the existing material qualities and deco language of the house become the syntax which creates a legibility and familiarity between old and new areas.
The form of the extension opens to the garden and northern aspect with the expansive glazed areas and external edges allowing for an intimate visual and physical connection to the existing Magnolia, Macadamia and Camellia trees.
A series of angled-columns which respond to the roof form zigzag along the new verandah providing support also for a cabled steel framework which will carry creepers grafting the garden to the house.
