black residence
cottesloe, western australia
Sited a few houses back from the beach at South Cottesloe on a small site, the starting point for this dwelling was a combination of a glazed pavilion in the garden as a ‘platform for living’ and a ‘thick wall’ for containment of the ‘service’ and private functions. The landscape and views from the site were of paramount consideration when deciding how the house was approached conceptually. There was a strong desire to engage the occupants with their surroundings, but at the same time shelter them from the street and surrounding neighbours. To this effect, the house looks inward to the internal Courtyard and Plunge Pool on the Ground Floor, and inversely looks outwards on the upper floor level.
